In mid-September, we held a Farm Tour at Round the Bend Farm, in partnership with Apponogansett Farm, for all of the families participating in the Subsidized CSA Project which aims to increase access to locally grown produce for under-served families, and provide cooking demonstrations and other workshops that teach participants how to enjoy their shares.
We brought participating families from Bay Village and Presidential Heights directly to Ashley’s Produce garden at Round the Bend Farm so they could see exactly where their food is grown. Round the Bend also made a delicious lunch, 100% sourced from locally grown produce and livestock, and then took families on a tour of the farm to see the fields, farm animals, and tiny houses.
We were also honored to be joined by a great group of leaders who have been integral to increasing access to locally grown fruits and vegetables through funding and policy change. It was a great day, and we thank everyone who came out, including Karen Voci, President of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation (project funder), City Councilor Steve Martin, MDAR Commissioner John Lebeaux, DTA Commissioner Jeff McCue, DPH State Liaison Maria Evora, and New Bedford Housing Authority Executive Director Steven Beauregard.
We look forward to continuing this program next year and expanding it to include even more families!
