We are excited to announce we were recently awarded a grant from the Island Foundation to support our ongoing work to expand food access – particularly access to locally grown foods – within under-served communities.
Many residents of New Bedford live in food deserts, and lack reliable transportation to get to and from grocery stores, farm stands, or farmers markets to purchase a wide range of lower cost, quality items – particularly fresh produce. With this funding, we will be able to continue work on our three farmers markets, create an outreach/marketing strategy for the upcoming FINI grant (read more here), begin planning the logistics of a mobile market, and work within a group of stakeholders to plan a year-round market.
Another important aspect of our food access work is its positive impact and engagement of the number of local farmers located across the Southcoast.
We are grateful the Island Foundation shares our vision to continue improving and growing our programs to increase our impact throughout the city.
