From January throughout March, over 200 individuals who live, work, or go to school in New Bedford, participated in the first ever New Bedford Fitness Challenge. On March 29th many participants came together to celebrate their success and weight loss at the Closing Celebration, held at YMCA Southcoast.
Throughout the challenge, registered participants were able to attend a variety of classes, including Zumba, boot camp, and rock climbing. They could also attend cooking demonstrations and two separate seminars about personal health and wellness.
In the end, a total of 148.8 pounds was lost among all who participated, and 13 participants won prizes in categories such as Best Attendance and Weight Loss. The three women and three men who lost the most weight over the course of the challenge won the grand prizes of free gym memberships. Congratulations to all the winners! We hope to see all the participants continue their journey toward better health, and we hope to see even more people come out next year!
And a big thanks to all those who coordinated the Fitness Challenge, and to the organizations that donated time, staff, and prizes, including: Parks, Recreation & Beaches, YMCA Southcoast, Carabiner’s Indoor Climbing and Fitness, Southcoast Health, Dartmouth Total Fitness, and the New Bedford Wellness Initiative.
